A week ago last Friday a couple of friends were fishing on the Alsea River. The river level guage read between 4 and 5 feet. In one boat 6 fish were hooked by 10 and 3 were landed. I saw the pictures. One of the fish was about 12 pounds. All the fish were silver bright. The other boat hooked 5 and landed only one. To bad it is raining so much while we are off for Christsmas. I hope the river is down during new years time off. Bob

This was a hunting trip I will never forget. I hunted three days and saw only a few cows. No bulls. The first day was very cold; hoarfrost, fog, and wind. No elk anywhere. The second day was sunny. I walked about 10 miles. I saw about 10 or 15 deer. I saw one really nice buck, but no elk. On the third day uncle Earl told us that he hadn’t shot and elk before 10 AM, so we slept in and left the tent about 8 AM. We walked east out of camp towards Pack Saddle spring. After a couple of hours Chris and I split up. He stayed up on the edge of the ridge. I headed into the blow downs. I hadn’t expected to see anything because of all the noise I made while walking over the downed trees. After about an hour in the trees I heard something moving in the Christmas tree size trees. Soon I could see the antlers coming over the top of the trees. The bull was moving right to left about 150 yards in front of me. I waited for him to move into and opening about 3 feet wide. When he got into the opening, he was mine.
The most special thing about this elk was that my Grandfather shot an elk in 1936 about 2 miles due west of this spot on the ridge across the valley from where I was. My elk wasn’t nearly as big as his. His measures 54 inches wide. My elk measured 43 inches.
Tell me your stories.

Welcome to my blog. This will mostly be about Bowron Lakes for the next 8 months. Our trip will start June16 or 17, 2008. If you would like to go with us, post a comment and let me know.
You will all need to have a passport to cross the Canadian Border.
Just a little about the canoe trips and myself. I have been around the circuit at Bowron Lakes 9 times since 1994. Two of the trips have been with just one other person. The other 7 trips have had 12 or 13 other persons.
For those who haven’t been on this canoe trip before, we will be on the water 8 days and 7 nights. We have designated campsites we need to reach everyday. Each campsite has an outhouse, tent sites for 7 tents, and enough room in the bear cache for all our stuff.
Some of us fish a lot. On one trip we caught only 5 fish. On another trip we caught over 100 fish in one day.
The fishing must be with single point barb-less hooks. No bait is allowed. Most of us practice catch and release. If you keep a fish, it must be eaten that day. Clean the fish before you get to camp, leaving the guts out in the lake. Make sure you have cleaned all the blood off your canoe and don’t wipe your hands on your pants. The bears love the smell of fish. The bones of the fish must be taken out and dropped in the lake after you are done eating. In 1995 a bear came into camp and licked the sand where I cleaned a couple of fish the night before. If you would like to see a picture of the bear licking the sand I can email it to you.
Bears are rarely seen. I’ve only seen 5 bears on the 9 trips. 4 of them were seen when I was on the trips with only one other person. Only one person has been attacked in Bowron Lakes Park since it open in the early 1900’s.
Come and join us. We always have a lot of fun. Rain or shine.
